Trauma Therapy for Adults in California

With Mark Spurlock, LMFT 45318, by secure video across California.

Some things that happened long ago are still happening inside you. An overreaction you cannot explain. A wall that goes up when someone gets close. Anger and resentment that seem bigger than the moment. These often sit on top of an older wound. I work with men and women by secure video anywhere in California. The work is careful and paced, and you set the pace.

How old wounds show up now

  • Anger or resentment out of proportion to what happened
  • Feeling on guard, even with people you trust
  • Shutting down or going numb in conflict
  • Trouble with closeness in marriage
  • Shame you cannot trace to anything recent
  • Memories or reminders that still hit hard

Trauma is not only war or disaster. It can come from a hard childhood, a betrayal, a loss, an accident, or years of being put down.

How trauma affects a marriage and family

An old alarm goes off, and your spouse gets the reaction meant for someone else, years ago. Both of you are confused by it. When you understand what the alarm is protecting, you can begin to respond to the person in front of you.

How we work on it

  1. Safety first. We build steadiness and calming skills before we go near the hard material.
  2. Trace it back. Using Emotional Mapping, we follow the reaction to the wound underneath.
  3. Name it. What happened, and how it still shows up.
  4. New responses. We practice what to do when the old alarm goes off.

We do not rush the story. You decide how much to tell and when. I stay practical and direct, and the room stays safe enough to tell the truth.

What a first session is like

Book with Mark. Your insurance is checked before the session. We meet by secure video from anywhere private. You do not have to tell the whole story in the first session. We start with what is happening now and what you want to be different.

Common questions

Do I have to talk about everything that happened?

No. You set the pace. Many people begin with what is happening today and work back only as far as they need to.

What methods do you use for trauma?

I use trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, my own Emotional Mapping method, and other trauma-informed approaches.

Can trauma therapy work by video?

Yes. Many people find it easier to do this work from their own home, in a place where they already feel safe.

Is this only for childhood trauma?

No. We work with wounds from any time of life, including recent ones.

Do you take insurance for trauma therapy?

Many major plans are accepted. Use "Check my insurance" to find your plan and book. Private pay is also available.

Experience behind this work

For twenty-five years I have sat with adults in crisis. Early in my career that meant crisis counseling after violent incidents and years of weekly group work with men and women on Anger and the harm it does. I have heard most of it. Very little surprises me, and nothing you tell me will change how I look at you.

You set the pace

Nothing gets opened before you are ready. The work goes at the speed you set, and it stops when you say stop.
