ADHD Therapy for Adults in California

With Mark Spurlock, LMFT 45318, by secure video across California.

You are not lazy. You care a great deal, and it still slips: the deadline, the keys, the thing you promised to do last week. After enough years of that, shame sets in. Therapy for adult ADHD is practical work on what happens in a real week, and I do it by secure video with men and women anywhere in California.

What adult ADHD looks like

At work:

  • Deadlines that arrive as a surprise
  • Ten projects started, two finished
  • Sharp in a crisis, stuck on routine tasks

At home:

  • A spouse who feels unheard
  • Bills, forms, and chores that pile up
  • A short fuse when you are overloaded

Inside:

  • "I will do it later" on repeat
  • Feeling behind, even on good days
  • Old labels that still sting: lazy, careless, too much

How ADHD affects a marriage and family

ADHD rarely stays with one person. A forgotten promise can look like not caring. A partner who reminds can start to feel like a parent. Both of you end up tired. When one person gets steadier, the whole home feels it. That is why a marriage and family therapist works on ADHD.

How we work on it

  1. Map a real week. We look at what actually happens, not what should happen.
  2. Build one system at a time. A few tools that fit how your mind works, not a pile of new plans that collapse by Friday.
  3. Work on the shame. We deal with the self-talk and the stories that formed when you were called lazy.
  4. Bring it home. We practice saying hard things clearly, so the people you love know where you stand.

I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy and other practical approaches, explained in plain language. You leave each session with one thing to practice.

What a first session is like

Book with Mark. Your insurance is checked before the session. We meet by secure video from anywhere private: home, the office, or a parked car. You tell me what brought you in. I ask direct questions and listen. Before we finish, we agree on one clear first step.

Common questions

Can therapy help adult ADHD without medication?

Therapy builds skills: planning, follow-through, managing strong emotions, and repairing trust at home. Many adults use therapy alone, and many use it alongside medication. Both paths are welcome here.

Do you prescribe ADHD medication?

No. As a therapist I do not prescribe. If you want to explore medication, I can work alongside your physician or psychiatrist.

Do I need a diagnosis before I start?

No. You can start without one. We look at your history and what your weeks look like, and I assess as part of our work together.

Do you take insurance for ADHD therapy?

Many major plans are accepted. Use "Check my insurance" to find your plan and book. Private pay is also available.

Can my spouse join a session?

Individual counseling is a good place to start. Once you have your footing, couples sessions are an option when you both want to work on the marriage. Couples sessions are booked from the Marriage Counseling page.
