Therapy with TRICARE West in California

Yes, I take TRICARE West. I am Mark Spurlock, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and I meet with adults by secure video anywhere in California. You can book directly below, and your coverage is checked before the first session so there are no surprises.

What I help with

Most of the people I see come in for one of these:

I work with men and women. Individual counseling is a good place to start. When you have your footing, couples sessions are an option when you both want to work on the marriage.

About your TRICARE West coverage

I take TRICARE West for service members, U.S. military retirees, spouses, and adult family members across California. Military life asks a lot of a marriage and family: deployments, moves, and the quiet that follows coming home. I have worked with men under pressure since 1998, and I keep it direct and practical.

For military families in California

California has military families from San Diego and Camp Pendleton up to Travis and Beale. Wherever you are stationed in the state, we meet by secure video, so a move inside California does not mean starting over with someone new. Military life puts weight on a marriage and family: long separations, the adjustment when someone comes home, and a spouse who has been holding everything together alone. I keep the work direct and practical. We name the problem, pick one thing to practice, and build from there.

How it works

  1. Click the button and pick a time. Sessions are 53 to 60 minutes.
  2. Your TRICARE West coverage is checked before we meet. Your copay, if any, follows your plan.
  3. We meet by secure video from anywhere private: home, the office, or a parked car.
  4. You tell me what brought you in. I ask direct questions and listen. Before we finish, we agree on one clear first step.

I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy and other practical approaches, explained in plain language. You leave each session with one thing to practice.

Why a marriage and family therapist

Whatever brings you in rarely stays with one person. A short fuse, a bad stretch of sleep, a habit that got away from you: the people at home feel it. When one person gets steadier, the whole home feels that too. I have been counseling since 1998, and that is the work.

Common questions

Do I need a referral for TRICARE?

It depends on who you are on the plan. Active duty service members need a referral from their primary care manager before seeing an outside therapist. Spouses, adult family members, and U.S. military retirees can usually book outpatient counseling without one. If you are not sure, book below and your coverage is checked before we meet.

We may get orders out of state. What then?

I am licensed in California, so I see you while you live here. If you get orders out of state, tell me early and we plan a clean handoff to a therapist where you are going.

Do I need a diagnosis to start?

No. You can start without one. We look at your history and what your weeks look like, and I assess as part of our work together.

Can my spouse join?

Start with individual counseling. Couples sessions are booked from the Marriage Counseling page when you are both ready.

What if my plan changes?

Tell me before your next session. I take several plans; see all plans on the Find Your Plan page, and private pay is also available.
