Therapy with MHN (Managed Health Network) in California

Yes, I take MHN (Managed Health Network). I am Mark Spurlock, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and I meet with adults by secure video anywhere in California. You can book directly below, and your coverage is checked before the first session so there are no surprises.

What I help with

Most of the people I see come in for one of these:

I work with men and women. Individual counseling is a good place to start. When you have your footing, couples sessions are an option when you both want to work on the marriage.

About your MHN (Managed Health Network) coverage

MHN is the behavioral health side of many Health Net plans and a number of employer programs in California. If your card says Health Net or MHN, or your employer’s benefits office pointed you to MHN, you can book with me directly.

Health Net card, MHN benefit

This one confuses a lot of people, so here it is plainly. Health Net is the medical plan. MHN handles the mental health part. Your card may say Health Net on the front and list MHN on the back, or it may only say Health Net. Either way, you are on the right page. Your coverage is checked before we meet. If your plan turns out to run through someone else, you are told before the first session, and we sort it out then.

How it works

  1. Click the button and pick a time. Sessions are 53 to 60 minutes.
  2. Your MHN (Managed Health Network) coverage is checked before we meet. Your copay, if any, follows your plan.
  3. We meet by secure video from anywhere private: home, the office, or a parked car.
  4. You tell me what brought you in. I ask direct questions and listen. Before we finish, we agree on one clear first step.

I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy and other practical approaches, explained in plain language. You leave each session with one thing to practice.

Why a marriage and family therapist

Whatever brings you in rarely stays with one person. A short fuse, a bad stretch of sleep, a habit that got away from you: the people at home feel it. When one person gets steadier, the whole home feels that too. I have been counseling since 1998, and that is the work.

Common questions

My card says Health Net. Is that MHN?

Usually, yes. MHN is the mental health side of most Health Net plans, so a Health Net card often means MHN coverage for counseling, and your coverage is checked before we meet. Most plans cover online counseling by secure video under the mental health benefit. Your coverage is checked before we meet, so you know before the first session. If it turns out to be a different plan, we sort it out before the first session.

Where do I find MHN on my card?

Look on the back of your Health Net card for the mental health or behavioral health phone number. It is often listed under MHN. If you cannot find it, book below and your coverage is checked before we meet.

Is this the same as my employee assistance program?

Not always. Some employers offer a few free sessions through an employee assistance program, and that is a separate benefit. This page is for the MHN mental health benefit that comes with your health plan.

Do I need a diagnosis to start?

No. You can start without one. We look at your history and what your weeks look like, and I assess as part of our work together.

Can my spouse join?

Start with individual counseling. Couples sessions are booked from the Marriage Counseling page when you are both ready.

What if my plan changes?

Tell me before your next session. I take several plans; see all plans on the Find Your Plan page, and private pay is also available.
